Zhenfang and his family‍

There’s a story behind each person who ended up at Cradle, but Zhenfang’s story was perfectly written for a TV movie (on Netflix), with a last minute airport cliffhanger. 😅

It all began in early 2017 when we realised that we needed to build an Android app in order to win over businesses with both iOS and Android users. Hiring talented and experienced mobile devs is never easy, especially in the small talent pool that is Auckland. We received many responses to our job listing, but very few candidates that we thought would be great. And then we saw Zhenfang’s application and reached out immediately. Here’s how the conversation went (roughly):

J: “Hey Zhenfang, the team really liked your experience and we would like to invite you in for an interview. When are you free?”

ZF: “Thanks James. I am actually leaving Auckland to go back to Singapore tomorrow. I didn’t have much luck finding a suitable position here so I am going back to my old employer.”

J: “Oh shit, we would love to have a chat with you before you take off. Can you make it happen?”

ZF: “I may need to bring my luggage with me so I don’t miss my flight.”

J: “Do it!”

The interview lasted a couple hours and we made sure that we left enough time for him to catch his flight back home. As Zhenfang landed in Singapore, we told him to pick up his luggage and buy a one way ticket back to Auckland. A few weeks later he showed up with his luggage and his family soon followed. Hired as a Android developer, Zhenfang has since broadened his skillset and contribution to all aspects of our product line. The timing of it all came down to the clutch, but we are so grateful that he joined Cradle!

So what does Zhenfang have to say about his experience so far:‍

1. How do you feel about your experience thus far working at Cradle?

It’s been an amazing adventure. I created an Android app with my favourite language, Kotlin, and expanded my knowledge on the front end with CSS and Javascript.

2. What’s been your favourite project/part of working here?

I actually really like our daily stand-ups and weekly introspection as it helps us plan and review our progress as a dev team.

3. Where do you see yourself in 2 years?

A father of two! Also, I would like to become an expert full stack engineer and amateur basketball star!

4. What do you like to do outside of work?

I spend a lot of my time coding, playing basketball, and writing poems.‍

5. What are you looking forward to, personally, in the next 12 months?

Continue to build an amazing product and see more users benefit from using it every day
