Phone numbers in Australia
How Australian phone numbers work in Cradle: formats, leading digits, porting via ACMA, emergency calling, and what messaging looks like for AU teams.
If your team works from Australia, this is the reference for how Cradle handles your numbers.
Country code and formats
Australia's country code is +61. When you write an AU number in international form, drop the leading 0 from the local format.
| Type | Local format | International form |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney landline | 02 5550 0404 |
+61 2 5550 0404 |
| Melbourne landline | 03 5550 0707 |
+61 3 5550 0707 |
| Brisbane landline | 07 5550 1010 |
+61 7 5550 1010 |
| Mobile | 04 5550 1234 |
+61 4 5550 1234 |
Cradle stores and displays numbers in international (E.164) format. When you type a number into the dial pad, you can use either the local format or the international form.
Leading digits
- Mobile: all start with
04. - Landlines:
02(NSW, ACT),03(Victoria, Tasmania),07(Queensland),08(South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory). - 1800: national toll-free numbers.
- 13 / 1300: shared-cost national numbers.
Porting your AU number to Cradle
AU number porting is governed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Your losing carrier and Cradle's carrier coordinate the cutover, with ACMA-defined rules.
How long it takes: typically 2 weeks, can be as quick as 3 business days or as long as 6 weeks, depending on your losing carrier, the complexity of the port, and getting the documents right at the start.

Emergency calling
Cradle has no emergency-calling capability. Calls to 000 will not connect through Cradle.
If you need to reach emergency services from Australia, call 000 from a mobile phone or a fixed line. From a mobile you can also dial 112, the international mobile emergency number, which Australian carriers route to 000. Cradle is not a substitute for either.

Messaging in Australia
SMS is available on Cradle's Australian numbers today, from the Cradle desktop app on Windows and macOS. The rules are:
- SMS is country-confined: AU Cradle numbers message AU mobiles only. Don't expect cross-country sends to a UK mobile to work.
- SMS needs a dedicated Cradle-provisioned mobile number (it can't ride on your existing voice number). See Why does my Cradle SMS need a separate number?.
- SMS is enabled per number, not per user. Your admin emails Cradle support to switch it on for a specific number. See Getting SMS switched on.
SMS on the Cradle iOS and Cradle Android apps is on the roadmap for mid-2026. Until then, send and reply from the desktop app.

WhatsApp Business is in private beta with general availability later in 2026.
Calling AU from another country
If you have an NZ or UK Cradle number and want to dial AU, prefix +61 and drop the leading 0. For example, a Sydney landline 02 5550 0404 becomes +61 2 5550 0404. Most international call destinations are gated on your account, see I can't make international calls.
